We are not on track.
The distance to equal is long. And the time is short.
Goal 5: To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by 2030 is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Progress on SDG 5 is measured using 9 targets, made up of 18 indicators and sub-indicators.
Our assessment shows that 13% of the indicators we use to assess progress are ‘very far’ from the targets set out under SDG 5, 15% are ‘far from target’ – that means that over a quarter are ‘far or very far" from the targets set for 2030.
This visualization was developed based on an assessment of the current level of progress toward achieving the targets.
What have we achieved so far?
Data gaps prevent us from seeing the full picture of progress, but from the data we do have, the outlook is grim.

On-time spent on unpaid care and domestic work (Target 5.4) a critical area for women’s empowerment, no country has met the target of equality between women and men.
Data gaps are pervasive
Where data are missing, women and girls are invisible.
More and better gender data are needed to accurately diagnose the barriers and spur the necessary policy dialogue on gender equality that drives change.
Where do we go from here?
We need bold action to close data gaps and accelerate progress. Unless more is done by the entire global community, we will fail to achieve gender equality by 2030.
